Sunday, June 22. 2008Mallorca 2008![]() As first part of this year’s holidays we decided for a 1-week travel to Mallorca to escape the European soccer championships in Vienna a little bit. Sunday, June 15th Continue reading "Mallorca 2008"

Tuesday, June 10. 2008Fotobuch-XXL on Debian lenny![]() Fotobuch-XXL.de is one of the few providers (if not the only one) that has a native Linux app to create and order photo books. It is annoying that most services only provide versions for Win or Mac, and even web apps are rare. Unfortunately, Fotobuch-XXL only provide their app for the Ubuntu and OpenSuse distributions. But, as Ubuntu is just a derivative of Debian, it should actually not be too complicated to also install the package on Debian. Indeed, it isn’t: One just has to take care that the Python version in Debian ‘lenny’ is 2.5, and not 2.4, thus forcing you to choose the corresponding package source for Ubuntu Feisty (7.1) and upwards: CODE: deb http://www.fotobuch-xxl.de/bin/ubuntu-py25 /
Note that I just tried whether the app actually launches, I neither really used it nor did I order a photo book. Yet. Monday, June 9. 2008Getting more professional![]() Meanwhile two more tools went into my gear: A pricey outdoor photo backpack (Lowepro Primus AW) and a tripod (Manfrotto 190XPROB with 3D head 804RC2). I need the tripod to make nice long exposures, e.g. in low light or for flowing water, and the backpack is able to carry it. However, for a city guy like me it isn’t that easy to start doing nature photography. This weekend I had planned to capture the sunrise at a pond, hoping for nice morning fog and reasonably clear sky, as it was rather rainy. However, we met friends in the evening before, had some pizza, and I went to bed after midnight. The alarm clock was set for 4.00am. At about 2.30am I woke up with a slight heartburn, and couldn’t fall asleep again until I finally turned the planned alarm off. At about 6.30am I woke up again and had a look outside the window: Morning fog, sunrise glowing in orange and yellow. Damn! But I think it’s just a case of getting used to that, and probably I have it in my genes anyway, as my father is a passionate huntsman and used to getting home late or up early, enjoying to sit in the dark cold for hours. Next try coming soon.

Thursday, June 5. 2008Google Earth 4.3 on 64-bit Linux![]() Recently I wondered why Google Earth stopped working on my 64-bit Debian machine when I upgraded Google’s app to version 4.3. It claimed to find no internet connection (“Error code: 29”), although everything was working fine before. The web finally unveiled the solution: The app needs the lib32nss-mdns package. Installed that, problem resolved!
