As first part of this year’s holidays we decided for a 1-week travel to Mallorca to escape the European soccer championships in Vienna a little bit.
Sunday, June 15th
We checked our luggage in in the evening before, as we had to get up early at 4.00am to get the taxi at 4.30am. Due to the soccer whoopee and the early hour we had to pay €30 to the driver in a lump sum; probably we were just stupid enough to believe him. We had clouds over Vienna when the flight started at 5.30am, but they disappeared when we passed Corsica. The airport in Palma de Mallorca is huge, we got our luggage and went to the car rental service to get our Smart. After the usual but this time only little odyssey we reached our hotel in Can Pastilla. We took a walk at the beach, because we had to wait for our room to be finished at 11.30am. We had lunch at one of the Balnearios at the beach promenade. As dinner we had a great buffet at our hotel every evening; I enjoyed the Paella so much, and the fine wine. Later we took a walk to the harbor nearby.
Monday, June 16th
We made our first car tour to the west coast. We went over Palma to Santa Ponça, Andratx and Sant Elm, where we had a stop at the beautiful beach. Continuing to the Mirador de Ricardo Roca near Estellencs we had a gorgeous view onto the sea. Later we reached the picturesque town Deià, where we had a snack on the terrace of a nice small and almost kitschy cafe. In Port de Sóller we watched the famous historical railway line. On the way back to Palma we accidentally went through the tunnel instead of going over the serpentines.
In the evening I couldn’t withstand to watch the first half of the Austria vs. Germany soccer game in the hotel bar together with a dozen Germans. It’s so ridiculous that the Austrians are so proud of a victory that happened thirty years ago.
Tuesday, June 17th
We made a visit to Palma. After parking our Smart in an underground garage, we went to the cathedral and explored the Old Town. The cathedral was closed for construction; Doris had been there some years ago, and at that time it was closed as well. We visited the Plaça Major, the Via Roma, and had a snack at a cafe near the cathedral. Then we drove to the Castell de Bellver, where we had a nice view at the city.
Back to Can Pastilla the beach wasn’t that inviting due to clouds and wind. At 11.00pm I took my tripod with me to make some long time exposures of the full moon at the beach until 1.00am.
Wednesday, June 18th
That day was a complete beach day, with a sunburn for both of us due to a long walk along the waves and a snack at one of the Balnearios. The region was already haunted by partying high-school graduates, most of them from Germany.
Thursday, June 19th
We took our north tour over Inca and Pollença to the Cap de Formentor. During our ride we stopped at several gorgeous miradores. We had some drinks at the lighthouse. We continued to Ca’n Picafort over the Port d’Alcudia. We had a snack at a nice small bar at an endless beach. It was isolated from the houses by a wall of trees that sheltered beautiful exotic birds. After dinner went to our beach to “howl at the moon”.
Friday, June 20th
As this was our day of departure, we actually had to leave our room in the morning. But as our flight was in the evening at 8.50pm, we prolonged our room for a little money. Once again we went to the beach. Time went by quickly, and so we finally had to say goodbye to that nice place. We drove back to the airport, delivered our car, and waited for our flight back to Vienna.
