After my holidays in Ireland I was a bit disappointed that I often couldn’t catch the fascinating landscapes in the pictures I took with my Canon Digital IXUS 750. I wondered if I should buy a good video camcorder or a good DSLR photo camera. More and more it became clear to me that it may only be a DSLR, and I’m even absolutely not positive about camcorders: False colors, low resolution, shaky pictures, people waving their hands or hiding their face, unnatural behavior of children, more time spent at filming, need for a TV screen. High quality and good art can only be obtained by DSLRs, in my opinion. Sure, there’s nothing better than having motion pictures of one’s own children, but that time has not yet come for me.
So, I wanted to get a general idea about the market and bought some photographic magazines containing tests and comparisons of current DSLRs. I’d prefer to buy a very good model instead of starting with a cheap one, although I don’t have much experience yet in taking photographs more professionally. I’m really willing to spend €1,000-1,500 for the body, and I know this might get rather expensive, as there are some more things to consider: A good lens may cost some hundret €’s, if not the same as the body itself. Also, more pictures are taken, maybe even in the high-quality RAW file format, and therefore several gigabytes of fast storage media are needed. To make financing more easy, I will reward myself for finishing my studies successfully... What a good motivation!
Currently, the potential candidates are the Nikon D200 and the Canon EOS 30D. But let’s see what the market looks like at the end of this year.
It took me long to finally get there, but the EOS 40D is now mine, all mine! I spent more than €2700 today for the body, the EF-S 17-55mm, two 4GB CF cards, a polarizer, a cleaning brush and a bag. I had some vouchers with a total of €500, and Canon̵
